Union Mobile Set to Launch Cambodia's National Messenger 'AngkorChat

Final preparations underway for an early next year launch.

The Cambodian government, marking 25 years of diplomatic relations with South Korea, is on the verge of launching the Cambodian national messenger 'AngkorChat', developed in collaboration with K-startup Union Mobile (CEO Lee Hee-Seung). Cambodia boasts the most active diplomatic and economic exchanges with South Korea in Southeast Asia. Breaking away from traditional industries like garment manufacturing and other secondary industries, Cambodia has recently been hastening its 'digital transition' to IT services and other fourth-industrial-era sectors. According to Union Mobile on the 25th, the company signed an MOU with the Cambodian government last May concerning the development and operation of the messenger service. The final inspection of this messenger service, slated for release early next year, is now in full swing. For a successful messenger service in Cambodia, Union Mobile is considering establishing a local business entity in consultation with the Cambodian government. Following the launch of 'AngkorChat', the Cambodian government plans to undertake various IT ventures with Union Mobile. Union Mobile is also reported to be strategizing a diversified platform business in Cambodia. Deputy Minister H.E Sothea of Cambodia expressed, "We are delighted to co-develop Cambodia's national messenger with a Korean startup that leads global messenger services in IT-challenged Cambodia," and anticipates "an expansion into various platform businesses based on this."
